Beautiful Letdown (thanks Switchfoot)

Okay, so life is a beautiful and funny thing. Beautiful in the sense that I believe that God is continually giving me glimpses of the Kingdom, which is absolutely amazing, causing me to smile and laugh and experience His gifts in the present moment. Other times, these Kingdom glimpses are completely overwhelming…so much so that I am absent of words to express the experience itself. It is as if these instances go beyond receiving gifts from the Father to actually experiencing the presence of Jesus before me.

Upon my return from Detroit this summer, I made a conscience effort to be more intentional in the relationships in my life...when those people are in-my-face present and even when they are only with me in thoughts and prayers. The Acts 2 community has so much to offer, and the little taste we were given, I believe, acted as a slight indulgence in the Kingdom and has therefore, left me desiring more.

As a result, I somehow jumped into fully trying to live in the moment and love the people in my life well. I would love to say that I am succeeding at this feat; however, I think I am just a jumbled mess more often than not, lol... and especially considering the quality-quantity dilemma. But the ‘funny,’ that I mentioned previously, fits in as I continue to read from various authors with no intent to learn how to actually function in the Kingdom per say... yet the words tell me how to do so and strike me as supportive of my heart while being accurately aligned with Scripture. Yet I feel so upside-down from our culture when I attempt to live this way. But while reading, I am quite encouraged and now wondering if the complex awkward feeling I am having is the exact feeling I am supposed to have. Therefore, maybe it is the conflict between kingdoms that makes my efforts feel so jumbled, because the standard by which I am measuring my thoughts, emotions, and actions are earthly, finite, and fallible. Because if what I am longing for actually does go along with all of Jesus’ descriptions of how to live life (which I am hoping and striving they are)... then the completely foreign and “backwards” Heavenly Kingdom should seem confusing and complicated from a secular perspective. And being caught in the middle…I should expect to stumble and feel incompetent at times and maybe often. But the other ‘funny’ thing is… it is all of the relational gifts in between that make all my confusion in trying to live and love like Christ that is really the most motivating and inspiring of all.

Grace

"What is grace if not life turned upside down? For no one in his right mind would take the good that he himself has done in order to measure another's motives and deeds."  Em Sept. 28, 2010

Laughter and Tears

Laugh:
1. To express certain emotions, especially mirth or delight, by a series of spontaneous, usually unarticulated sounds often accompanied by corresponding facial and bodily movements
2. To show or feel amusement or good humor
3. To feel a triumphant or exultant sense of well-being

Cry:
1. To sob or shed tears because of grief, sorrow, or pain
2. To make a loud utterance of an emotion, such as fear, anger, or despair
3. To weep

Although these actions are quite opposite in theory, the commonality I see between calls for praise to be given to the Creator. Recently, I have found myself responding to the crevasses of my soul with either a bubbling resonation of sound or an overwhelming ocean of teardrops. Both remind me of how human I am, and at the same time, how very spiritual I am as well. Although both put a stutter in my step, they bring me a sense of meaning and purpose. They connect my soul with that of another. No matter how brief or impersonal the relationship between those of us laughing, in that instant we are united. We are closer than we were before just for sharing that glimpse of Sonshine together. Further still, it is in the midst of anxiety and sorrow that I realize the depth by which I am connected to the soul over which I cry. Yet oddly enough it is when the rain of my heart pours over my cheeks that I feel the most disconnected from that very person.

Now upon face value it sounds as if I am losing it, but I am not. Why? ... Because out of all of these contradictions, both my laughter and tears affirm the value of life….with all it’s complexity, with all of its and/or(s). It is at the origin of these two emotional responses that I experience the reason for living, to LOVE….both the journey and the people in it. For I believe that our earthly experience would be a canvas of gray…not even a black and white sketch, for the color distinction signifies something more brilliant than the meaningless fog of gray. What I mean is….without laughter and tears to remind us how valuable each encounter with another thinking… breathing… hoping individual is, would we understand the depth of Christ’s sacrifice? So for me, it is through my laughter and tears that the color of life is revealed at its true brilliance. I mean, do you not think the Savior fully experienced the value of humanity prior, during, before, and after His death? Really, didn’t he once laugh with those who the tears of heaven wept for that day? Furthermore, would He have experienced the intensity of the anguish He did had He not recognized the loss He felt as the Father turned away?

He knew what He was missing…what we were missing (perfect communion with the FATHER!

So crazy to think that without the laughter, the tears might not hurt as badly. However, if there was only ever laughter…I might not experience His strength in my weakness…I might take for granted those most dear… for my tears reveal the depth of my love.

To laugh and to cry: divided in theory yet united in love. I will strive for love unconditional…in which there is sunshine after the rain… where laughter and tears perform a beautiful dance under the rainbow created by both sunlight and precipitation…partners in need of one another in order for me to experience true reality!

Who’s Really the Padawan?

In the midst of it all, I forget to document externally all that I etch within. If only I had the ability to instantaneously download my thoughts into written form! Of course, I would only utilize this ability on a voluntary basis, such as while driving in the jeep, sitting in class, or rocking on the front porch swing. But better yet, there are times right in the heart of an experience that I would love to click into download-mode in order to capture the words, ideas, & hopes that unite with my feelings and immediate environment to create a beautiful moment.

Over the last few months, I have become more aware of the small yet tremendously significant moments that have been given to me. These are instances of great joy, increased depth of understanding, surrender to God’s sovereignty, and the overwhelming recognition of the fragility and wonder of life. Wow… the end right there sounded a little like a bad 1970s birthing video, lol….however, I meant it in all sincerity as to the raw emotions and thoughts that have permeated the externals of my world and have begun to reside within my heart.

Today as I was reading, I again came across a statement about the power of supportive adults in students’ lives. "Adults inescapably exercise immense influence in the lives of teens-positive and negative, passive and active. The question therefore, is not whether adults exert influence, but what kinds of influence they exert (Christian Smith, Soul Searching, 28). I truly support this statement and strongly believe that I am wired to take hold of it with vigor, and thus respond to this reality so that the positive and active is present. However, if I only focus on this part of the equation, I become stifled by my imperfections, lack of confidence, and minimal experience. I overanalyze and hyper-focus on the ‘me’ part of everything. I do not consider the power of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual perspective that ties ‘his/her’ story with my story, and that of the Savior’s story. I want to delight in how all three: student, Jesus, and me all blend together. I want Him to break through the imperfections, timidity, and novelty and be who I can’t, see beyond the now, and do the unthinkable.

I recognize that He is the main character, and I at best am a co-star. However, the idea that I as an adult can make an impact on students almost places students as the audience, rather than an active player in the story, and I do not believe this to be the only case. In fact, more often than not I believe we are on this journey together, and I just as readily as they, have the opportunity to learn from the Holy Spirit and speak into my life. Most recently it has been impressed upon me the privilege I have been given to learn from the students who have been placed in my life. It is this acknowledgement that encourages me to attempt to immortalize some of my most cherished moments to date as a person who is ‘striving to represent Christ well and actually live life with students.’

As I will not be able to as vividly portray what is scrap-booked in my mind’s eye, I hope to capture enough in a string of words so that in years to come I can recall with brilliant color these intimate and profound moments….

Royal family…dinner…movie…just 3
School…jeep…notes….present at the classroom door
Wednesday nights…driving…sharing….learning
Discipline…tears…self-disclosure…consolation…hope
Gym…basketball…clarification…conversation…simplicity
Poverty…chaos…pleading…tears…truth…foundation
Home…laughter…games…family
Starlight…community…freedom…joy
First day of school…letter…smiles
Fear…panic…prayerful dependence…encouragement…peace
Conversation…safety…trust…accolades
Good night…prayers…confidantes
The 7-11 jaded soul…random conversation…prayer…seed planted
Windows down (or broken, lol)…country music…renovation
Status update…encouragement…bear hug
Music…worship…uninhibited…friends
Project… nervousness…surprise…gratitude
Miscommunication…hurt…unconditional love wins

…to those who helped create these moments, I love you!

So, I wonder if the way I feel in these moments is like the way God feels about us when we grow in our knowledge of who He is or when we act in response to the Holy Spirit in a way that stretches us and speaks Truth into the surrounding brokenness. What if the flutter of joy and the irrevocable smile that overtakes me when I reflect upon these moments is experienced by our Creator and Savior when we worship Him by merely leaning to His rhythm? How can that not further stir in me a desire to love those precious to me all the better and to be aware of those He would like to add to my world?

I always want to be a student of the generation who Jesus commissioned to spread His story across the world!!!!!!!!!

Paradox

In all honesty, I am not sure where I should begin. It seems that it is only in the rarity of these stepping stone segments of my life that I chose to reflect through prose. This seems quite unfair when I consider my love of words. I talk to myself constantly and call upon divine guidance frequently. In fact, Jesus and I are in regular conversation as I go about my days. There is definitely something to be said about creating something of one’s own…something unique and melodic. So, as much as I am thankful to be writing again, I also find it quite ironic that this second dialogue of the year comes after returning from Detroit. It has now been 10 days since I last saw the streets and people I have come to love. The time spent there was amazing, but two weeks with so many that I consider to be family (students of both Detroit & EASM) makes it all the more difficult to leave. In those 14 days, I not only gave of myself to some of the sweetest souls God destined, but I learned so much from those younger than me. Now in my beautiful home which rests upon the sculptured land that Jerm and I own, I am left feeling both hopeful and empty. It is in response to these feelings that I am urged to create order & meaning to this obvious paradox. Cognitive dissonance is the term I have been trained to call the emotions I am now experiencing, and I must in some way articulate the multitude of thoughts, whether true or dishonest, in an effort to resolve my conundrum.

Yesterday I found myself reading a quote by an anonymous 15-year-old boy that I believe resembles what some of my friends would share if only they could begin to see beyond their daily lives to what could be. “To the Adults of America, You may say, ‘Everyone makes mistakes,’ Well then excuse us, the teenagers of America, when there are one million girls impregnated every year, and young boys are shot down in our streets every day. Please, don’t stare when you begin to realize that the rehab centers are starting to fill with teenagers, and about a quarter of every teen’s allowance is spent on drugs and/or alcohol. Don’t let us get in the way when we stand in line at the grocery store, shopping for our drunk mothers, or praying at church for our fathers to come home.” This summer, the impact of the lives of our Detroit children spoke volumes to me. For the first time, parents were seen outside amongst the children. However, for the most of them, it was not to bid their son/daughter goodbye or welcome him/her home, in fact, it was as if they were lifeless statues in the midst of a reality T.V. show gone wrong. In a way, it was allegorical to the Son of God coming to save His people yet going unseen by those who needed Him the most. Children were pleading to remain at the Dream Center with us, hiding under van seats, and requesting to live in our homes in Florida… hugs and the words ‘I love you’ were exchanged by their children with strangers.… and this all transpired as parents glanced with hardened faces. As I leave them behind, I question my role in their lives and am at the same time greeted by the knowledge of those here who I believe I am called to serve.

Stepping back into church, I am baffled by the appearance of apathy. I use this word in place of the word ‘ignorance’ in hopes of not selling my brothers and sisters in Christ short, or unconsciously giving myself far too much credit. However, there is something to be said about the Acts 2 church. There is something to be said about the genuine and self-revealing conversations I had with our own students for 2 weeks. Working together constantly, growing in areas of weakness, yoking our strengths together, refining our attitudes, serving one another without complaint, delighting in the sight of one another, and watching God increase our numbers daily. As an only child, one might question how living with 26 people with only 2 cold showers can be joyful, but I will confidently confess that I am struggling to live without them each day. It was totally joy-filled! Why not share & love to the fullest? What are we doing here if not that? I am completely overwhelmed!

With all that said, the next school year commences in a mere 5 days, and I am taken back by how steadily the last year has proceeded. Although I delighted in more of these days than any of the others in years past, I feel as if I have been blinded to this year’s approach, and now it is standing before me, taking delight in my shocked reaction. You see, I have never felt more content with my life than I have in this last year. And this continues to baffle me, considering the lack of consistency and the day-to-day struggles that have challenged my decision. I have all trust that God knows what he is doing. Yet it is in moments like the last few days after my return that I question whether I can really discern His voice. Am I defined by what I do? The frustration with this is that I truly believe the answer is both ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ You see, I want to be all that God has created for me to be …utilizing the talents He has given me, and with my whole heart loving the people He has placed in my life. Yet, wrapped in this package of gifting and loving, is my desire to live a life that is constantly building a legacy of my few short years on this planet. I cannot live my life without purpose and intentionality. Yet, by waiting upon what I thought to be God’s plan, I see a string of part-time jobs….defining me. Is that worth a legacy? If I was once again a teenager, would I desire to model my life after the life I have now? On the other hand, am I being selfish to think I need a more ‘professional’ title to be leaving a mark on the lives that God places in my life. Because honestly, without these jobs I would not have many of the people in my life that mean the most to me. I wouldn’t be stretched for full Godly dependence. I wouldn’t be challenged to surrender daily. I would not long for the Acts 2 church or to spend my spare time joining the hands of teenagers to walk the streets of 3rd Ave and McDougall. Yet even in knowing all of this, I long to have a niche of my own. But then again, maybe I long to be something or someone I’m not. And I don’t mean that in a way that alludes to being like Christ. I so desire to be like Him, yet I feel as if the model I am seeking is an earthly one, not the divine human man who lived completely and perfectly. So, this analysis too shows me that I have so much to still to understand about my journey. This is my human struggle….it is this fade to gray that I pray becomes black or white in the near future. Maybe I have pictured full-time youth ministry to look like one thing, and for me, maybe it is another.

“Lord, allow me to fear you in a way that brings insight to my days. Cause me to never quench my thirst for You! Continue to place students in my path that want to go deeper and rest in your calling on their lives! Help me discern my place in Your Kingdom.”
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Surprising Showers

So here I am, again, at a moment in which I recognize the amazing gift I have been given in the sweet surrender of the Savior. The ebb and flow of life is worthy of a ponder once in awhile. It happens in so many arenas: relationships, professions, hobbies, and the spiritual life as well. Although this may sound odd, I believe it is important to consider the patterns of our lives, as I believe we see Jesus show up more readily when we are anticipating His arrival. Yet, He can catch us unexpectedly when this skill atrophies. On this day that is filled with rain, small surprises rather than precipitation are actually showering down. Coming out of inner-city Detroit only 2 days ago, I am shown that although I leave a place and people for whom/which I have hopes and dreams, I enter my hometown where the hopes and dreams I have for it collide with the other…and then these two worlds intersect with a third. It is at these “apex” moments when I feel the most alive in Christ. The Holy Spirit rushes through me like dynamite creeping along before full domination. OMGoodness!!!

Often times the plateaus of uncertainty cloud my view of the mountain-tops that await beyond. I hate to think that I once lived in the valley of my own perspective and not from the lofty view that He has of my life from above. Although I am not always given the opportunity, today has offered another glimpse of God’s perspective of my life. It is absolutely incredible to watch God reveal His glory through the “coincidences” of daily occurrences. When the timing of things unfolds so smoothly, I am at a loss for words; yet I bubble over with excitement. I knew He remained with me, as I have felt content for the most part over these last several months since deciding to use my degree in ministry rather than the public schools. However, God clearly reminded me today that He is working it out backstage where I am not given privilege to see. He works in such incredible ways. I feel ridiculously honored to take part in such a journey.

If you are asking yourself “What?”… I am sure you are not alone. I merely want to create a mental picture of my feelings so that I can relive them, as some in my life have so wisely guided me that such a writing exercise can do.

Yesterday, my friend and partner in ministry (Kev), shared our dreams with some very important people, and we realized that what we thought God wanted us to do may have actually been in preparation for greater things in the other town we have grown to love, Detroit. However, the positive responses of these other Godly individuals encouraged us that we were on the right path here as well. TWO AWESOMES AT ONCE!! Then, today out of the gray (haha…not blue skies) I had a wonderful discussion with a past colleague! The seed to a link between the church and the school was planted. This is such a big deal to me. The commencement of another dream unfolding before my eyes…maybe…I do believe so. I am invigorated again by His plan for my life. I am so stinking excited I can’t even stand it. If cloud 109 exists, I am there!!

Here’s the deal: I could have chosen to go to a different school and not met a professor who would have guided me into the graduate field I entered. I could have been bypassed for an opportunity to intern in the county where I grew up and feel led to use my abilities. I could NOT be going to the church where an extremely talented and Spirit-inspired individual has been called (the same school year I began graduate school) to guide the students in our area. That person could have chosen to NOT ask me to join him on this journey. I could have chosen to go my own path rather than God’s and said NO to that same offer. I could have been doing anything that may have prevented me from answering the phone today. Who knows? Oops! God does!! Wicked Sweet, lol. So there…I am overflowing with who God is and how He continues to show up in my life. Whether He enters in a valley or on a plateau, I believe He unveils the mountain when I need it. I didn’t even know I needed it, but here I sit recognizing this need and delighting in His grace all the more for sending it to me when I decided to be unprepared for His arrival. The best unexpected guest has once again walked through my door! And I am in awe!!
